2021 January Films (27) Shows (1) Books (4)

VIDEODROME

A fun but dated film that delivers some gritty and cool moments, like Scanners.

WHITE TIGER

Underrated right now, best of the year.

PELICAN BRIEF

Alan J. Pakula (Director, All The President's Men) is a skilled and precise director but this script is a bit slow and the parking garage scene shows our heroes getting away with everything by a lucky coincidence that took me out of the film.  This is a well performed and crafted film with a few "Hollywood" over the top action moments that much of Pakula's work avoided with grace and precision.

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING

A great buddy adventure film about power, loyalty and friendship.

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY

Amazingly beautiful and inspiring film about too many themes to name.

THE DIG

One that no one seems to be talking about right now.  Everything about this film is great except the pace which is slow.

SOUL

An interesting PIXAR project that tackles tricky subject matter with passion and energy.

SCANNERS

Insane, bonkers, wow.  I am glad I saw it.

SALT

SALT is so damn cool...it is strange because I think it is one of the best "skilled person on the run" films but is spawned no more films.

REVERSAL OF FORTUNE

A fascinating character study.

PALM SPRINGS

Funny and clever with spotty acting.  That being said Palm Springs is a very fun time.

OUT OF AFRICA

A beautiful, soul searching film about love and legacy.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL

An absolutely brilliant film that is more powerful than almost any other on the holocaust.

PENGUIN BLOOM

A funny, charming and wonderful tale about healing and family.

HOW THE WEST WAS ONE

Must see.  The film is unique because of it was shot in a rare technology Cinerama and the entire film seems unique due to this approach.

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL

Everything you love about classic horror films in a house...it is here for you.

THE FAMILY MAN

Nicholas Cage is one of my favorite actors ever.  I think this movie does something interesting with the theme of "choice" and how a person's choices define their life.

DEAD SNOW 2

An awesome, badass, amazingly cool ride that is not for everyone.

CRASH

Everything that poster says but I will add the word...WOW.

BLOOD CREEK

An interesting Shumacher project that seems to come into its own as the story goes on.

AUDREY ROSE

Fascinating horror psychological thriller.

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE

Amazing cast with a fun entertaining "who-dun-it" plot.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS & HOBBIT TRILOGIES REVISITED

Watching again, I am still blown away how much of Peter Jackson's work looks and feels better than much of what is coming out in this genre today.  Scale models, top-notch acting and an approach to fantasy that feels more like a story about medieval times is a winning combination.

ABOUT TIME

Touching and warm.  A beautiful achievement by everyone involved and on every level.

ALL CREATURES BIG AND SMALL: SEASON ONE

Fun and everything you want in a series.

MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING

This is a timeless work.  One of the best statements the book makes is that "A strong why can survive almost any how."

SECRETS OF THE FREEMASONS

Masionic rituals and practices are quite important to our culture and are referenced more than I would think.

THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING

It is hard to describe but FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING was everything I thought it could be and more, a lot more.

THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA

A wonderful tale with fascinating dialogue.

COMPANY

A great show that I watched to learn more about Stephen Sondheim, whose work truly is remarkable.
