Using Complimentary Colors For Directors

Take a look at this beautiful painting by Vincent Van Gogh, the Café Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, 1888.

Two colors placed together will appear different or have a different effect on the viewer, this is called simultaneous contrast.  One of many reasons why this painting may immediately catch our eyes may be due to some use of COMPLIMENTARY COLORS to create an even more striking simultaneous contrast.

Using Complimentary colors is a great way to create striking visuals in a film - this mixed with committed performances and passionate (and often meticulously crafted draft by draft) writing can make a knock-out combination onscreen in a film.

Directors can use complimentary colors onscreen to achieve a "look" that people will immediately find interesting.  This is done by using combinations of colors that are on opposite ends of the color wheel, simply put.  As in Van Gogh's famous painting we see the use of two color opposites which are orange and blue.  Here is the Color Wheel to create your own.
