The essence of the novel is that fear of being killed in combat may even drive a man to completely lose his sense of morals and ethics. This is a fascinating concept for a book - what I don't like is the element of this novel that feels like a wartime version of "Waiting for Gadot."
Repetition of dialogue and a lack of movement is difficult to get very interested in and it goes on for a very very long time.
