Article: RUNAWAY TRAIN (1985) Genre: Thriller/Crime Director: Andrey Konchalovskiy Stars: Jon Voight, Eric Roberts
Written originally by Akira Kurosawa, this high-octane intellectual thriller follows an "Of Mice and Men" model of relationship, a lovable fool and a jaded mastermind. The film's greatest strength lies in its incredible screenplay which sounds like a 19th century existentialist novel. The film itself is about the human condition and man's ability to sink into the bile of the lowest depths of existential despair which frees him to commit unthinkable acts. A scene where Voight tries to force Roberts to do an almost impossible task of jumping from one train car to another ends up in Voight's Manny beating him nearly to death, into total submission. Buck must jump it, or he will die at Manny's hand. The female train worker calls Manny out for this saying he is an animal but Manny corrects her "not animal, man! Man!"
