The compare/contrast to 1998's copycat studio film "Armageddon" is well worth the research as a study in studio playbooks and audience reactions. Some say Michael Bay's "Armageddon" stole the public's interest by being more fun, virtually the films are the same plot with vastly different approach. "Deep Impact" is a serious and sobering look at the real implications of an asteroid threat. I think the film does a great job making us care about this large cast of characters by showing us a glimpse into their lives.
