Now who in the hell would have ever thought this would be a solid film?
This is another example of a trailer cut that does not sell THE PRODUCT and it will probably hurt sales DEARLY...this is a tragedy to me because...UNDERWATER is truly a quality film! The film starts off with an incredibly vibrant sequence and gets us moving right into the action/survival horror.
This may not seem like a major point to mention to most but it sure is to me - the diving suits were completely badass reminding of Gears of War or Halo and this was a pivotal part of the art/design of the film. These suits "working" helped sell a lot of my ability to buy into the world and the situation. Kristen Stewart is truly not on my list of performers to go out of my way for but she truly rocked in this film and brought the appropriate levels to the character of charm and sympathy.
Sure it borrows from Alien or maybe even Leviathan (recommended to me) but it does also seem to forge just enough of its own creature design, world building and super sleek technology to give us something fun and fresh enough to work. I only hope we see a box office to reflect it but I feel the marketing here seems flawed and painfully close to the trailers for recent Alien films, this may kill interest before it starts - now lets look at the numbers...
We can see the numbers and Underwater generated about 14 million thus far (out about a week) and the heavy 50 million dollar price tag will have the film losing money for FOX.
I had a great time at the movies with this one and the ending is straight out of the brilliant world of cosmic horror genius H.P. Lovecraft.
