Article: CON AIR (1997) Director: Simon West Stars: Nicholas Cage, John Cusack Genre: Action

CON AIR is a wild ride and a hell of a lot of fun!  Critics got it wrong here people - this is a FANTASTIC FILM.  What a cast this film has!

BUSCEMI, CAGE, CUSACK, MALKOVICH!

(Nick Cage rocks in this film - "Put the bunny back in the box.")

The directing here seems to fall right in line with a popular action style used in the 90s - canted angles, fast cuts, bang, boom!  It is all moving so quickly that sometimes it is hard to follow (only gotten worse nowadays - search "Taken 3 fence jump" or "Bryan Mills Jumps a Fence" for proof).

This style is used appropriately here though and there is still some beautiful moments of cinematography...

I am not being sarcastic I swear.

The characters here are the most impressive part of the film.  They each have their own wants, desires, skills, hang-ups, quirks and more.  The characters are so well defined that I anxiously await each new scene just to hear them all talk to each other - are they realistic?!  Is the film realistic? NO!  Who cares?  The film is not meant to be realistic or make a statement about anything too deep...the closest character to that point of catharsis may be John Malkovich's Cyrus "the virus" with his statements on the law and freedom.

(Buscemi turns in a great performance and makes us wish the film had more scenes with him!)

Don't forget to hang in there because after the climactic plane crash on the Vegas strip we have another car chase with EXPLOSIONS!  After that we have a sappy ending with a great song to boot - what the hell?!  SO MUCH! The great part is that all of this WORKS and I LOVE IT.

CON AIR IS A WINNER and look at the soaring box office!
