ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (2019) Director: Quentin Tarantino Stars: Leonardo Dicaprio and Brad Pitt Genre: Western
I've now seen the film twice in the theater and IT IS a masterpiece.
This film is why you want to become a filmmaker. This film will make so many more people want to be a filmmaker after me. I love this film so much that it is hard to put it into words. Apparently Tarantino was writing this film for 5 years as a novel before he decided to make it into a script for NUMBER 9, the 9th Tarantino film. It is his best one - it is hysterical, violent, heart-warming, COOL - Fucking cool, cool, cool.
I think you could just watch the driving scenes in the film and salivate. Night and neon - tracking from the side of Pitt's CLIFF BOOTH as he accelerates into the night, fearlessly. A true American JOHN WAYNE HERO type. Pitt is the real hero with none of the acclaim, money or accolades while Dicaprio just plays one on TV and has all of the above.
Tarantino says that Dicaprio and Pitt are as exciting a duo as ROBERT REDFORD AND PAUL NEWMAN were. He's right.
I noticed how much the film IS a western this time around with Bradd Pitt really a lone gun slinger in a stand-off at HIGH NOON against the Manson clan of psychopaths. They are introduced the way Sergio Leonie has introduced his characters - in a bright HAZE of sand and dust.
The ending is so funny that I could not stop laughing. The people around me in the theater were not only laughing at the film's best moments but I am sure they were laughing at me laughing. This film made me feel alive and it was the most fun I have had in the movies in years.
